What Is PEMB Erection?
Understanding the Pre-Engineered System
Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings (PEMB) are structural systems where all primary framing members, secondary structural elements, roof panels, and wall cladding are designed and fabricated as a cohesive system by a single manufacturer. Rather than using standard, uniform steel beams, PEMBs utilize built-up, tapered steel framing that puts the exact amount of steel where the engineering dictates it is needed.
The Erection Phase
PEMB erection is the process of taking the fabricated steel packages from the manufacturer and assembling them into the finished structure on site. This involves:
- Shake-Out: Unloading, inventorying, and organizing the steel components around the slab to prepare for efficient hoisting.
- Primary Framing: Rigging and standing the main rigid frames, columns, and rafters.
- Secondary Framing: Installing purlins, girts, eave struts, and flange bracing that connect the main frames and support the exterior cladding.
- Sheeting and Insulation: Installing the wall panels, roof system, trim, and associated thermal envelopes.
Because these systems are pre-engineered to exact tolerances, the erection phase requires specific sequencing, specialized rigging, and meticulous attention to connections and bracing to ensure structural integrity.
