How Do Standing-Seam Roof Systems Work?
Protecting the Building Envelope
Structural standing seam roof systems are highly regarded for their weather resistance and durability in commercial and industrial applications. Unlike exposed fastener roofs, standing seam systems conceal their fasteners beneath the raised seams.
Installation Characteristics
The installation of a standing seam roof on a PEMB requires exacting procedures:
- Thermal Movement Accommodation: Metal roofs expand and contract with temperature shifts. Standing seam panels are typically attached to the purlins using concealed sliding clips, allowing the roof plane to move independently of the structural frame.
- Mechanical Seaming: Many structural standing seam panels require a motorized seaming machine to fold and lock the panel edges together, creating a robust, weather-tight joint.
- Complex Flashing: Managing penetrations, ridge caps, and eave conditions on a floating roof system requires specialized flashing techniques to maintain weather resistance without restricting thermal movement.
Because the roof is a critical component of the building envelope, proper installation by experienced crews according to the manufacturer's exact specifications is essential for long-term function.
