What Should Owners Know About Metal Building Insulation?

Managing the Interior Climate

Because steel conducts heat efficiently, insulation is a vital component of most occupied or climate-controlled metal buildings. The insulation package is typically installed by the erection crew concurrently with the roof and wall panels.

Common Insulation Systems

  • Faced Fiberglass (Over-the-Purlin): The traditional method where fiberglass blankets with a vapor retarder facing are rolled over the framing before exterior panels are attached. It provides basic thermal resistance and condensation control.
  • High R-Value Banded Systems: These systems utilize steel banding to support multiple layers of uncompressed fiberglass insulation in the roof cavities, offering higher thermal performance.
  • Insulated Metal Panels (IMP): Composite panels consisting of a rigid foam core sandwiched between two metal skins. These provide exterior cladding, high thermal resistance, and a finished interior surface in a single installation step.

The Importance of the Vapor Retarder

Beyond thermal resistance, proper insulation manages condensation. The vapor retarder must be installed carefully, with all seams taped and sealed, to prevent moisture from entering the insulation cavity where it can cause structural and functional issues.
